Sustainable Ways Solar Home Tour

(Key Points in analyzing how well a solar gain house
may perform and longivity of the structure post construction)

  1. Implementation of thermal mass and south facing glass.
    1. Two forms of thermal mass

a.       Pendulum swing mass (earth burm north side)

b.      Isolated internal thermal mass

c.       Pendulum swing= Large battery

Internal mass=Small battery

d.      Thermal mass=Dense earthen material that absorbs heat and returns it to the home at a much slower rate than the change in air temperature. This results in creating an average mean temperature.

  1. Ventilation and Protection from condensation
    1. Ceiling ventilation

        a. Goal for ceiling is to achieve a high insulation level at the same

time allowing excessive heat and moisture to escape.

    1. Exterior wall ventilation and protection

a.       Goal is to properly insulate so that the dew point may not end up

inside the wall cavity.

b.      Implementing a creative wall ventilation system may be

Beneficial here in this area.

    1. Orientation of a home

a.       The safest range (can’t go wrong) falls between due south and 10 degrees southeast.

b.      Southeast being safer than southwest so that you can catch morning sun quickly to combat cold night temperatures.

c.       We believe that it has been proven that solar gain homes have functioned well in a range from 18 degrees southeast to 18 degrees southwest.

d.      A multi-faced or round south wall could assist in capturing morning sun at the same time rotating the house to the west a bit to capture the views.

e.       Remember that there are infinite concepts and designs that can be achieved for proper solar gain.

    1. Planters- Pros and Cons

       Pros

a.       Visually appealing to live among plants

b.      Promotes mental and emotional well being to bond with your plants and organically supplement your food source.

c.    Humidifies and naturally filters living air space.

d.      Ensures that home owner builders will never be bored after the  process of constructing their home is complete…heehee

                       Cons

a.       You will need a budget the proper amount of time to maintain your planters

b.      Due the increased inside humidity levels, you should give more thought and attention to your ventilation systems to prevent moisture build up in your wall and ceiling cavities.

    1. Exterior moisture protection

a.       EPDM linings work well to protect north burmed wall

b.      A double lining is recommended (Vertical lining on back of burm walls), (Horizontal lining below final landscaping protruding behind your home.)

c.       Every home site needs to be evaluated individually.

d.      Some landscapes may allow you to turn your protection system into a collection system.

e.       Remember “Dry” thermal mass performs better than a “Wet” thermal mass.

    1. Fossil fuel usage during and after construction

a.       How much fossil fuel was used to make the products used to build your home??

b.      How much fossil fuel will be used to operate your home post construction??

c.       How dependent are YOU on the oil from the middle east??

                  Summary

 Questions and Answers

a.                         Did everyone come to some understanding of why it has become necessary to move home construction in this direction?

1.      Fossil fuel consumption (green house effect)

2.      Affordability of the owner (utility bills)

3.      Mental health and well being

Please remember this is just an introduction to these home systems. If you are looking to begin a project, we highly recommend further research on your own accord and further use the free consultation from the Building and Design focus group of Sustainable Ways.
